Dog Housebreaking Tip #8

Is paper training the solution for you?

First of all, contrary to a generalized belief, paper training is NOT the first step to housebreaking a dog. In fact, I firmly believe that paper training your dog prolongs the housetraining process.

Why? First, because it doubles the work. You’ll have to retrain your dog all over again when you’ll want him to start eliminating outside. Second, by allowing him to eliminate on paper, you’re telling him that it’s ok to mess inside. Needless to say that’s the opposite of what you want to achieve.

If you have a small dog and live in a high-rise, what you want to do is to train your dog to eliminate at a designated place inside your condo or apartment. That’s what I call indoor training and to achieve that all you have to do is to follow my proven 7-step technique.

The best tip I can give you if you really have to paper train your dog is to have him eliminated outside a couple of times a week until it is time to train him to go outside. This tip may seem simple but it will make the transition a lot easier for your dog.

Since most of you are new puppy owners, I would like to give you a very important piece of advice relating to puppy training. This tip has nothing to do with housebreaking, but I know from experience that it will be extremely useful to you and your dog.

One of the most common mistakes new puppy owners make is to let their puppy do unacceptable things. Most of the time, they don’t even realize it. When your puppy is doing something, ALWAYS ask yourself “Will this behavior be acceptable once my puppy has reached adulthood?” If the answer is no, stop that behavior.

For example, when you arrive your puppy jumps on you. At 8 or 10 weeks old, that may be “cute”, but when your dog will be weighing 60 pounds I’m not sure you’ll still find this so cute!

Next time, you’ll receive some tips on how to clean up after your dog.
